Lying

Children with ASD are typically and sometimes embarrassingly truthful. It is their nature to tell things how they see them. They can, however, tell lies and can become quite invested in them. The formal term is pseudologia fantastica or ‘unreal fantastic logic’, described by one researcher and paraphrased here as ‘Lying entirely out of proportion to any discernible benefit. It may be extensive and very complicated and may be observed over a period of years or even a lifetime.’56 Its prevalence outside of people with ASD is unknown, and the author has only seen it in children and adults with ASD, so it may be an indication of being on the spectrum.

One of the ways that it has been seen to arise is that when children with ASD are asked, for example, how they feel, they may respond by saying, ‘I don’t know.’ The response from an unknowing adult may be, ‘You must know.’ If an authority figure to a literal child with ASD indicates something as a fact, then they take it on board and have to make up the response. This may occur in many ways on many days and therefore becomes a pattern. The child then seeks to anticipate the question by saying something obviously untrue. This in turn attracts a negative response but at least not the impossible question that they could not answer. As a result their strategy is reinforced and on they go.
